Post-Rock

Mogwai Fear Satan

Mogwai

Young Team · 1997

16:18 vs. 3:30 standard single

Mogwai closed their debut record with sixteen minutes of distilled post-rock architecture — a long quiet opening of clean guitars, a slow build through multiple layered dynamic movements, a loud apex that lasts several minutes, and a famous flute coda that enters in the final third and functions like the sun breaking through after a storm.

It is the blueprint for almost everything Glasgow post-rock did afterward. It sounds like weather because it was built to feel like weather: the opening pressure drop, the accumulated static, the break, the long slow dissipation. Sixteen minutes of front passing through a room. Put it on loud, stand still, let it happen.
