Nights

Frank Ocean

Blonde · 2016

5:07 vs. 3:30 standard single

“Nights” has the most famous beat switch in modern R&B — a full tonal pivot three minutes in, the first half the color of a late summer afternoon and the second half the color of 3am after the party’s over. The pivot lands exactly at the midpoint of Blonde, splitting the album in two and refusing to tell you which half is the dream.

Frank Ocean doesn’t belt here. He murmurs, overdubs himself, lets his voice drift in and out of the mix the way a thought drifts in and out of focus when you’re driving alone. It’s a song that sounds like memory itself — unreliable, cinematic, already ending by the time you’ve noticed it started.
