Adrianne Lenker spends three minutes of “Not” listing what the feeling she’s trying to describe is not — it’s not the hunger, it’s not the sun, it’s not the fire, it’s not the flood — and then spends the last three minutes playing the guitar solo that is the only positive statement she’s willing to make about it.

The solo is one of the great moments in recent indie rock: raw, overdriven, held together by pure nerve. The song is grief for something you can’t name, which is also grief for someone who is still alive — you don’t know what you lost because you never got to label it when you had it. Lenker plays the not-knowing.
