Souvlaki Space Station
Slowdive
Souvlaki · 1993
5:51 vs. 3:30 standard single
Slowdive built “Souvlaki Space Station” with a dub-influenced low end and a guitar arrangement that shimmers and bends like light through humidity. It’s the most spacious track on Souvlaki — a song that mostly consists of the space between its elements rather than the elements themselves.
The title is literal in spirit: it sounds like being in orbit above a weather system and watching a front rotate slowly through a hemisphere. Neil Halstead and Rachel Goswell’s vocals don’t sing so much as hang in the upper atmosphere of the mix. Six minutes of sustained altitude.
