Storm
Godspeed You! Black Emperor
Lift Your Skinny Fists Like Antennas to Heaven · 2000
Godspeed You! Black Emperor open their double-LP masterwork with “Storm,” a twenty-two-minute instrumental that moves through four discrete movements — a pastoral horn-led opening, a slow rising build, a full-band storm that actually earns the title, and a long deconstructed comedown. It is the clearest example of the band’s architecture in their catalog.
No vocals. No lyrics. Just nine musicians building a weather system out of strings, guitars, drums, and field recordings, and then letting it pass through the room. It sounds like weather because the band treats music as geography — a landscape to be traveled across rather than a song to be sung. Twenty-two minutes of front moving through. Put it on, turn it up, and stay inside it.
