Hurry Up, We're Dreaming · 2011

5:42 vs. 3:30 standard single

Anthony Gonzalez made Hurry Up, We’re Dreaming as a sprawling double album about childhood and memory, and “Wait” is its quietest and most devastating moment — five and a half minutes of synth pads and Gonzalez’s fragile, breath-heavy voice repeating a single phrase that slowly reveals its full meaning.

The song was later licensed for The Fault in Our Stars and became a generation’s cue for specific kinds of crying, but the licensing didn’t hurt it. It still works. Put it on during any ordinary errand and the scene lifts itself into the register of elegy. The walk to the bus. The fluorescent aisle. The light changing for a reason.
